Retire Young Retire Rich

February 15, 2008 on 2:39 pm | In Books, Financial Success, Love, Traffic |

I woke up this morning feeling really tired. I guess it is understandable after driving through the stressful traffic of yesterday….don’t tell me you didnt experience the special Valentine traffic (lol). The first thing that came to my mind was,…..”what is really all the hype about Valentine?” Story for another day. The next thing on my mind was, “When am i going to stop this 8 to 5 or more kind of lifestyle?” I didnt feel like getting out of bed and its not because am lazy. In my mind, i just felt that there had to be a better life than this. Waking up so early in order to set out on time so as to avoid rush-hour traffic and getting back home so late because we stayed back at work to avoid the evening drive….frankly, i dont know about you but e don tire me.

While i was busy processing these thoughts, i remembered the Robert Kiyosaki book titled “Retire Young, Retire Rich” and i immediately told myself, i am going to retire young and retire stupendously rich. Is it written in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that i have to retire at 60? or that it is an offence if i retired earlier? No and No.  Where did we get that notion that we have to grow so old before we retire? From our parents? From the schools? Where exactly.

Anyways, regardless of the source of that belief, i have come to tell you that you can retire young, early and rich. All it takes is the desire to liberate oneself from the entrapment of salaried pay. Yes, you heard me right, it’s an entrapment. Salaried pay is not designed to enrich me and you. Our employers will pay us just enough to bring us back month on month. Think about it. From one Jay-O-Be (Just Over Broke) to the other….

The American Dream is to be able to make so much money at an early age that you could decide when to retire, knowing full well that you have enough money stashed away to ensure a life not burdened by financial restraints. What is the Nigerian dream? hmmmn..i know you would articulate it for me,if in fact one existed. I recommend this book, “Retire Young, Retire Rich” (the 5th of the Rich Dad series) to you. Kiyosaki provides practical insight on how to put together a financial plan which will make you prosperous, control your financial destiny (by taking advantage of smart investments in real estate and stock market) and help you choose your own retirement age.

Just in case you think its farfetched, please know that people are already retiring early in Naija. How did they do it? Stay tuned…

  1. hmmm! I agree with you a 100%. Its like the employers of today are so aggressive in the drive to keep expanding their businesses, and in most cases do not even care about the employees wellbeing. its a crazy rat race out there. Let the the truth be told, not every1 is cut out to retire early, some just love the rat race thingee and I look forward to employing them to keep making money for me.lol. But for those of us, who so much hate the rat race, try & find a way out. The American Dream is the way to go!

when those of us that are willing to pay the price to obtain the prize of financial freedom do so, we inspire and confirm to others that it is doable. You can, the question is, will you?
